The ESR Stat Plus ™ analyzer is an automated erythrocyte sedimentation rate instrument manufactured by HemaTechnologies (hematek.com) in Lebanon, New Jersey. Using HemaTechnologies’ EZ-SAFE, Mylar-wrapped, self-sealing analysis tubes, the ESR Stat Plus can provide three sedimentation rates in 5 minutes using only a 25-microliter sample of EDTA blood. Traditional Westergren ESR methods take one hour and require a 1-milliliter sample of venous blood. Because of the smaller sample volume required, the ESR Stat Plus is an excellent choice for hospitals with large pediatric patient populations. The smaller sample size means no more QNS report-outs for sed rates. Additionally, using the self-sealing EZ-SAFE analysis tubes increases safety and convenience, and results in a significant reduction of biohazard waste. The ESR Stat Plus is simple to operate.
The user places the EZ-SAFE analysis tube, containing anticoagulated blood, into the analyzer and the direct-read feature produces results in 5 minutes. A display screen shows the patient ID and results. Using infrared optics the ESR Stat Plus is extremely accurate, with correlation values of 0.96 or better as compared with the 1-hour diluted Westergren method. Options for the ESR Stat Plus include a trigger-less bar code reader that speeds sample processing and displays patient identification, reducing patient ID errors. A thermal printer is available for producing hard copies of results. The ESR Stat Plus measures 9 inches high by 10 inches wide and 14 inches deep.
