ESR Stat Plus is an advanced, direct-read analyzer for assessing erythrocyte sedimentation rate, also known as ESR or sed rate. Physicians assess ESR levels when evaluating conditions that cause inflammation in the body. With the ESR Stat Plus, clinicians need only a 25-microliter blood sample from patients to receive accurate sed rate results on an easy-to-read screen.
Doctors may order ESR analysis for various reasons. For example, physicians evaluate sed rates when assessing whether a patient has arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, polymyalgia rheumatica, and other conditions. However, ESR is a nonspecific test for inflammation. An elevated result lets the clinician know that inflammation is present, but does not provide the specific location of the inflammation within the body. As a result, physicians often order an ESR test in conjunction with other testing to diagnose certain conditions or diseases. Physicians also use ESR to monitor and manage specific conditions over time. An increasing ESR may indicate that a patient is experiencing more inflammation and not responding to treatment. However, a decreasing sed rate can show that a patient’s condition is improving due to prescribed therapies.
