ESR Stat Plus is an easy-to-use diagnostic tool for measuring the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) of blood, also known as the sed rate. Manufactured by HemaTechnologies, ESR Stat Plus requires a small blood sample and produces results quickly. The ESR test measures how far erythrocytes fall in a vertical column. In clinical medicine, physicians frequently use ESR testing to help ascertain whether inflammation is present in a patient’s body.
Physicians often rely on ESR when diagnosing specific conditions, such as polymyalgia and temporal arthritis. A very elevated sed rate may also indicate a serious disease or malignancy. A decreased ESR rate may be a sign of blood diseases in which red blood cells have an irregular shape or size that causes them to settle more slowly. Moreover, physicians often use ESR testing to monitor disease activity in certain conditions. Lowered ESR measurements may indicate a positive response to treatment therapies for such conditions as rheumatoid arthritis, temporal arthritis, and potentially Hodgkin’s disease. However, an elevated ESR may indicate a poor prognosis in several types of cancer.

When certain health conditions are present, a patient’s erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), can change. This test measures the rate at which red blood cells (erythrocytes) settle to the bottom of a test tube. Typically, ESR rises when inflammation is present, in conditions such as arthritis; it can also be elevated during pregnancy. Conversely, ESR falls with other conditions, including sickle cell anemia and congestive heart failure. Today, automated analyzers, such as the ESR Stat Plus from HemaTechnologies, give medical professionals fast access to accurate ESR results.
Often, physicians will order ESR testing to assess a patient’s unexplained symptoms—such as fevers or muscle symptoms, or to diagnose or manage certain chronic conditions, such as autoimmune disorders or tuberculosis. An abnormal ESR reading does not mean that a patient has a particular condition, but it might indicate that some follow-up testing is necessary. For emergency departments and hospitals, which have many patients, it can be beneficial to have a quick and accurate testing device, such as the ESR Stat Plus. |
